Receptive Language Disorders refer to difficulties in the ability to attend to, process, comprehend, retain, or integrate spoken language.
Early signs and symptoms:
- Inability to follow directions (following of routine, repetitive directions may be OK)
- Difficulty responding appropriately to a variety of quesitons
- Echolalia (repeating back words or phrases either immediately or at a later time)
- Not attending to spoken language, with or without high acitvity level
- Re-auditorization (repeating back a question first and then responding to it)
- Jargon (sounds like "unintelligible speech")
- Using "memorized" phrases and sentences
