Receptive Language Disorders

Receptive Language Disorders refer to difficulties in the ability to attend to, process, comprehend, retain, or integrate spoken language.

Early signs and symptoms:

  • Inability to follow directions (following of routine, repetitive directions may be OK)
  • Difficulty responding appropriately to a variety of quesitons
  • Echolalia (repeating back words or phrases either immediately or at a later time)
  • Not attending to spoken language, with or without high acitvity level
  • Re-auditorization (repeating back a question first and then responding to it)
  • Jargon (sounds like "unintelligible speech")
  • Using "memorized" phrases and sentences
